How many jobs does the gas industry create?

Gas projects have created more than 100,000 jobs – including construction jobs – in Australia over the past few years.

The Queensland coal seam gas industry alone now employs about 40,000 people (including contractors). The growth of Queensland’s onshore gas industry has revitalised many regional centres, including Gladstone, Toowoomba and the towns of the Western Downs. The industry is providing skilled jobs for young people who would previously have had to leave the district to develop their careers. It is also creating jobs in retail and support services. In the September 2013 quarter, the Darling Downs-South West region had an unemployment rate of just 3.2% compared with the Queensland average of 5.7%. (see Department of Employment webpage)
